DAK vs German Infantry in Encounter

Marders stem the tide of incoming armour

I managed to get out to Perkins Hobby House in Petawawa to get a practice game in before the MW 1500 tournament that he's hosting later in April. I'm trying out my DAK germans to get back into playing with them. Brad was getting ready for the same tournament so this would be an ideal practice match. We rolled up encounter and as always tanks attack infantry.

German Infantry

SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT

Objectives are on hill behind the fort on left, in the open on the right and in the corner top left and on hill behind building top right

Infantry and guns deploy to protect an objective

Infantry and Pak 40s hold the other objective

Panzer IIs deploy to hold the objective but ready to move out!

Nebs deployed on a hill to both hold the objective and cover the DAK

Panzer IIIs take up position on the far right with the OC and 2IC ready to advance quickly on the objective

Recon move puts the Panzer IIs that much closer to the objective

UNITS IN RESERVE
DAK
  • Panzer IV Es
  • Pioneer Platoon
  • 8-rads
German Infantry
  • Infantry Platoon
  • Infantry Platoon
  • Panzer III Ms
  • AA Platoon

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
DAK:With only 6 platoons and being the attacker, I chose to have the III Ms, II Fs and Nebs on while the remainder would come in scatter reserves.

German Infantry:With 8 platoons in totally, Brad chose to have a mixture of guns, infantry and the Marders holding the objectives until the remainder of the force could be mobilized.

Unable to fire this turn the Nebs dig in

DAK:Tanks continue to advance with the II Fs dueling with the Marders while staying out of sight of the PaK 40s.

German Infantry:The Marders continue to make saves and bring the pain on the lightly armoured IIs.

        TURN 3

        Fire in the Sky

Marders continue to be hassled by the Nebs but to no avail

8-rads arrive from reserve and join the Panzers in the village collectively they knock out a gun

The Marders teeth finaly find the II F's throat. They kill 2 and bail 2 forcing the platoon to flee

        TURN 3 SUMMARY
DAK:Tanks continue to advance and the left flank crumbles when the Marders wipe out the II Fs. On the right flank the III Ms slowly start to dig out the guns. The assault against the 10.5cm guns takes out a M while the infantry manage to stop the assault and take out an 8-rad!

German Infantry:Reserves will be critical in the coming turns to slow the advancing tanks. So good shooting from the boys slows the assault but armour is going to be needed in short order!

        TURN 4

Just as hoped for the Calvary arrive! Panzer III Ms roll in guns blazing taking out the last III M

Marders attempt to smash the remaining 8-rad who manages to sneak away in the nick of time

None to happy about losing a platoon the OC destroys a Panzer III M

Despite the Nebs fire the 10.5cm guns take out the 2IC while the Marders take out the OC

        • 1 x Panzer III M

        TURN 4 SUMMARY
DAK:The Marders are doing a number on me, seems they are making saves like demons! Hopefully I can get the Pioneers and IV Es in shortly to swing the odds.

German Infantry:Both objectives are looking good for now. Withe reinforcements coming shortly for both sides I need to take out the other III M and finish off that platoon.

        TURN 5

IV Es arrive and make a b-line to get into the fighting

        • 1 x Panzer III M

        TURN 5 SUMMARY
DAK:Pioneers and IV Es arrive from reserve on opposite ends of the table. Still reeling from the last shooting from the Germans, much of this turn is spent sorting out the next step.

German Infantry:With the initial thrust now well defeated its time to shore up the defenses and ready a counter attack.

        TURN 6

Rather than go head to head with the III Ms the IV Es try and get a flank

The Pioneers continue to advance moving from cover to cover

The sole DAK III M continues to duel with the III M platoon bailing one

        • 2 x 10.5 cm gun
        • 1 x Panzer III M

        TURN 6 SUMMARY
DAK:The Panzer III M duel continues with neither side getting any real advantage while the Pioneers advance on the other objective.

German Infantry:All platoons continue to either dig in or reinforce the objectives with the Marders proving to be particularly apt at making brilliant kill shots.

        TURN 7

IV Es move to engage the Marders but fail to either hit or their firepower checks.

The Marders have no such trouble destroying 2 IV Es!

German Infantry:The Marders continue to show their value knocking out tanks left and right.

        TURN 8

Pioneers dismount and prepare for the assault on the PaK 40s supported by the remaining 8-rad

Small arms fire knocks out a stand of Pioneers pinning the platoon

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

        • 1 x Marder
        • 2 x 10.5 cm gun
        • Panzer III M Platoon

        TURN 8 SUMMARY
DAK:Pioneers finally make it into position to assault next turn. Right flank thrust has been completely blunted with only a single tank in each platoon remaining.

German Infantry:The DAK is on it's last legs with several platoons down to a single tank. Next round should be the death blow.

        TURN 9

DAK Pioneers moving to assault the infantry and guns

Remaining III M assaults the infantry and guns on the objective but its too little to late

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

        • 2 x 10.5 cm gun
        • Panzer III M Platoon

        TURN 9 SUMMARY
DAK:Assaults on both objectives are too little to be truly effective. The defending force simply breaks off ready to counter attack.

German Infantry:Assaults are absorbed without significant losses. Just need to pass pinning checks next turn.

        TURN 10

DAK Pioneers move for the final assault on the hill but their numbers are too low

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
        DAK
        • OC and 2IC
        • Panzer II Fs Platoon
        • Panzer III Ms Platoon

        • Panzer III M Platoon

        TURN 10 SUMMARY
DAK:With the loss of the III M, there is almost nothing left of the DAK. Almost every remaining platoon is down to a single armoured vehicle or a couple rifle teams.

German Infantry:The infantry and guns manage to take out the final III M, now to find the final IV E.

        TURN 11

Marders move to support the infantry as the remaining IV E moves to engage

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY

        German Infantry
        • 1 x Marder
        • 2 x 10.5 cm gun
        • Panzer III M Platoon

        TURN 11 SUMMARY
DAK:The final IV E moves up to follow behind the III Ms. But it is too late to have any impact.

German Infantry:Marders move to counter the IV Es movement and successfully hold the line.

This battle when on for what seemed like ages. We didn't end up timing it but we were well over 3 hrs when we finally called it quits. Brad did a brilliant job repelling my advances and I think that depending on when time would have expired in a tournament this would have been a 4-3 win for him. Can't wait to get my next game in, this time I'm going to make sure that it's timed.

        1. Id like to point out here that the Dice just weren't their for Big Willie, his daring Recce rush had me very concerned and had it not been for some 5's and 6's on my part, that Recee and Pioneers could of made this game a much different story! A great game for sure.
