Panzer Pioneers vs German Grenadiers in Counterattack

 Now that's some handy gunning!

This was the second game for me at the Dice Devil's Fall Fubar. It was 1650 MW and held at the Barrhaven Legion. My opponent was Digari who, for those who read the last couple of Battle Reports, will know was the other half of the team I played in the final round of the OMG doubles tournament. The mission was Counterattack and since I was Mech infantry against his infantry I would be attacking. I have issues with this scenario being in a tournament, because I have pioneer supply vehicles and they allow me to put out wire (which I warned Digari about before hand).

Panzer Pioneers
  • OC and 2IC with knackers
  • Armoured Pioneers with knacker and supply vehicle
  • Trucked Pioneers with knacker and supply vehicle
  • 2 x 8-Rads
  • 2 x Panthers
  • 4 x Marders
German Pioneers
  • OC and 2IC with pupchen
  • Full platoon with PaK 38
  • Full platoon with PaK 38
  • 2 x Panthers
  • KV-1e
  • 2 x 8-Rads
  • 3 x Nebs with PaK 38
  • Stukas

SETUP AND DEPLOYMENT

Objectives are in the open top centre and far right

Armoured Pioneers massed for the big push!

Pioneers ready to repel the coming horde

More Pioneers ready to open fire

Nebs dug in around the objective

Wire spread along the length of the Germans Pioneers deployment area (Panthers in Ambush)

More wire set up for the German reinforcements, the 8-Rads would have to drive around and the KV-1e would have to slow down

UNITS IN RESERVE
Panzer Pioneers
  • Nil
German Pioneers
  • 2 x 8-Rads
  • KV-1e

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers: I went with wire obstacles and deployed a string along the entire deployment area so he would have to breach it with his Pioneers or the Panthers. The other wire I spread out where the reinforcements would have to snake there way through to get to the objective.
German Pioneers: Wire, in no mans land...really? I mean...I get that if both armies are across from each other. Stupid supply vehicles.

TURN 1

Armoured Pioneers cross the open and into the woods where they assault knocking out two stands and losing one in the process

Marders take a hit with one being bailed while the AA gunners shoot down a Stuka

Panthers spring from ambush for fear of the Pioneers assault

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers
  • 1 x Pioneers stand
German Pioneers
  • 2 x Pioneer stands

TURN 1 SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers: The way both the terrain and the enemy were deployed meant that a left flanking was the only option. I was really surprised that I only hit twice in the assault.
German Pioneers: Assaulted on turn 1! At least the platoon was able to pull back and are ready for the next turn. Hopefully the Panthers will be able to stop the rampaging Armoured Pioneers.

TURN 2

Half tracks swing around and gun down 3 more stands

Panthers begin dueling with the Armoured Pioneers bailing their opposite

Trucked Pioneers occupy all the buildings along the route that German reinforcements will have to take

Nebs open fire knocking out a half track

Stukas swoop down and the Marders knock out both of them!

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers
  • 1 x Pioneers stand, 1 x half track
German Pioneers
  • 5 x Pioneer stands

TURN 2 SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers: The AA gunners are on the ball knocking down both planes. The half tracks did really well taking out the pioneers in the open. Unfortenately, the armoured pioneers didn't feel like unpinning so the assault was stalled, for the moment.
German Pioneers: At least the platoon didn't unpin. But the Panther didn't remount and is starting to get bracketed by the other Panthers.

TURN 3

The German Pioneers boosted by the sole Panther arriving to support. They take out the Armoured Pioneer platoon!

Newly arrived KV-1e is destroyed by Pioneers in assault while 8-Rads attempt to find a hole to squeak through

Marders fan out to try and take out the lone Panther, losing one of their own in the process

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers
  • Armoured Pioneer platoon
  • 1 x Marder
German Pioneers
  • 5 x Pioneer stands
  • KV-1e
  • 1 x Panther

TURN 3 SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers: One Panther still won't remount but the Marders are starting to swing around to the remaining Panther's flank. The 8-Rads are holding the objective waiting for it to go live, while the Trucked Pioneers hold the reinforcements at bay.
German Pioneers: The other pioneer platoon needed to move a turn or two to be ready to counter attack more effectively. The large platoon has done a great job staying in the fight but that won't happen for much longer.

TURN 4

8-Rads attempting to keep the Pioneers at bay

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers
  • Armoured Pioneer platoon
German Pioneers
  • Pioneer platoon
  • KV-1e
  • Panther platoon

TURN 4 SUMMARY
Panzer Pioneers: The Marders cracked the armour of the Panther, taking out the platoon. The Trucked Pioneers were unable to motivate themselves to attack the 8-Rads but did hem them in.
German Pioneers: Panthers are dead and with them the only chance to stopping the armoured Pioneers. The wire obstacles didn't play a part in the forces moving from the initial objective, but they sure did for the reinforcements.
We called it here with me getting a 5-2 win. Digari and I decided to get a drink and check out some of the other games so we could heckle the other players. I'm hoping that I get the chance to get the last battle report up shortly.

  1. what book or pdf is Diragi's list from, to my knowledge only North Afrika has a pioneer list that can have Pak38s in the combat platoons but you can't have KV or Panthers in the Desert.

  2. Eastern Front, hands down the Eastern Front armies are tougher than the North African ones.
