MW Kiwi Infantry vs German Infantry in Encounter v3!

Maori Infantry advance on the objective and Panzers!

This was my first time playing FoW since the Christmas break and I still haven't read all the way through the v3 rules. I'm chewing through it as fast as I can so I'm hoping by the next time I play I've at least read it once. It was really good to see the crowd of usual suspects at Perkins Hobby house this Tuesday night for FoW. Bob agreed to put me through my paces as a new recruit for v3. We rolled up Encounter and got ready for a slug fest!

More German Infantry holding the North-West Objective

Mortars deployed to provide fire support on both flanks

  • Infantry Platoon
  • Infantry Platoon
  • 4 x 6 pdr Portees
German Infantry
  • 3 x Panzer III Ms
  • 3 x Pak 38s
  • 2 x 88s
  • 4 x 10.5cm guns

DEPLOYMENT SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:After seeing Bob take his Infantry and deploy them on both objectives I was hopefully that I could roll a flank and the game would be over before the first reserves came on.

German Infantry:Bob was the attacker and therefore had to deciede on what he was going to keep in reserve first. Then he rolled a one for first turn so things looked good for the Kiwi's!

TURN 1

Shermans double forward covered by the UCs who knock out an infantry stand

COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry
    German Infantry

      TURN 1 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:UCs advance quickly escorting the double timing Shermans.

German Infantry:Marders move to cover the heavy armour push while the remainder of the force digs in.

      TURN 2

Shermans assault and destroy the infantry platoon but mortars are unable to call in smoke on the Marders....

      COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
      Kiwi Infantry
        German Infantry
        • Infantry platoon

        TURN 2 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:I failed to smoke the Marders!!!! I mean really I needed a 5 and rolled 3,3,3 & 1! The game was over turn 3 if only I could have rolled a 5.

German Infantry:The lack of staying power of the infantry is made up for Marders who open fire on the Shermans bailling 2 and destroying 1! The Shermans flee the field.

        TURN 3

Marders take position to engage the UCs and clear them off the objective

The UCs take cover from the Marders only to be flanked by newly arrived Panzer IIIs! This could spell doom....

And they manage to not take a single hit!!!!!

        COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
        Kiwi Infantry
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon

          TURN 3 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:The UCs manage to survive (I have no idea how/why) looks like this game is going to go on much longer than anticipated.

German Infantry:Rolling a 6 for reserves followed by another 6 for where the Panzer's would arrive ensured the game would go on much longer.

          TURN 4

The UCs make a break for the woods but the Panzers are nipping at their heels!

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon

          TURN 4 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:A platoon down made for a very quick turn. The UCs are doing everything they can do stay in the fight. Mean while the Portees advance as quick as they can not wanting to get the Panzers attention just yet.

German Infantry:The OC and 2IC are dodging UCs while the Panzers try and bring their firepower to bear.

          TURN 5

The UCs continue to draw fire but stick in the fight, thank god for woods

The second wave is coming Portees leading infantry!

Infantry advance in the North behind a wood

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon

          TURN 5 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:The second wave is making the best possible time getting up to engage the Panzers. The UCs are doing their best to tie up the much larger tanks.

German Infantry:Those damn UCs just won't die! They are either bailed or I can't hit them. On the North flank the Marders have moved around and are ready to support the infantry in either the offense or defense.

          TURN 6

Portees move into hull down positions and start taking shots on the Panzers while another UC finally falls to the Panzers guns

Infantry stay just inside the wheat fields in case the Panzers want to take a bite

The newly arrived 10.5cm guns limbered are too tempting a target and the UC races forward to take out one

Portees open fire on the 10.5cm guns taking out another one

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          • UC Platoon
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon
          • 2 x 10.5cm gun

          TURN 6 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:The Infantry are building up for another push towards the objective, as always its a manner of timing. The 10.5cm can't be allowed to live for long so everything that can engage them does.

German Infantry:Finally got the last UC to make them run, that took way longer than it should. 88's and PaK 38s are both in position to hold the center of the field.

          TURN 7

Infantry in the North continue to advance on the objective

Having dealt with the UCs the Panzers now turn their attention to the Portees bailing one

The Portees return fire knocking out a Panzer III and another 10.5cm gun!

The 10.5cm battery is reduced to a gun, the staff team and the commander

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          • UC Platoon
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon
          • 2 x 10.5cm gun
          • 1 x Panzer III

          TURN 8

The infantry on the North show off their shooting skills taking out 2 stands

Infantry are now a turn away from launching their assault on the Panzers

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          • UC Platoon
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon
          • 2 x 10.5cm gun
          • 1 x Panzer III
          • 2 x Infantry stands

          TURN 8 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:Continued push in the South reaching critical mass. In the North the infantry demonstrate their shooting skills.

German Infantry:The Kiwi's are everywhere! The shooting from the German big guns proves uneffective this turn.

          TURN 9

The 3" mortars are so low on the target priority they continue to hammer the two big AT platoons taking out a platoon commander

The Panzers know that time is up as the infantry advance supported by the Portees

Panzers move out from the woods to defend the objective. Their fire combined with the other AT guns bails a portee and knocks another one out

In the North the Marders move up to take out the infantry killing a stand then assaulting

In the assault 2 infantry stands die taking out a Marder and steering them away

          COMBAT CASUALTY SUMMARY
          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          • UC Platoon
          • 1 x Portee
          • 3 x infantry stand (3rd Platoon)
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon
          • 4 x 10.5cm gun
          • 1 x Panzer III
          • 2 x Infantry stands
          • PaK 38 Pl Comd
          • 1 x Marder

          TURN 9 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:Portees contine to anchor the advance of 2 infantry platoons. 10.5cm guns out of action and Mortars are covering themselves as they advance on the big AT guns.

German Infantry:10.5 cm guns all destroyed the remainder of the platoon withdrawals. The Kiwis in the North wood are proving to be a problem.

          TURN 10

Maori Infantry continue to assault the old man, his 2IC and the Panzers....

and push the Panzers off the objective!

          Kiwi Infantry
          • Sherman Platoon
          • UC Platoon
          • 2 x Portee
          • 3 x infantry stand (3rd Platoon)
          • 4 x infantry stands (1st Platoon)
          German Infantry
          • Infantry platoon
          • 4 x 10.5cm gun
          • 1 x Panzer III
          • 2 x Infantry stands

          • 1 x Marder
          • 1 x 88
          • 2IC

          TURN 10 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:The Portees lose another of their number and fail to remount. The AT guns in the center continue to fall to the 3" mortars while the plucky infantry advance

German Infantry:The Maori advance seems all but unstoppable at this point.

          TURN 11

The second wave of infantry move onto the objective

In the North the remainder of 3rd Platoon holds their ground

          • 1 x 88
          • 2IC

          TURN 11 SUMMARY
Kiwi Infantry:Finally I was able to push the Panzers off the objective. Talk about a great game!

German Infantry:This could have been over quickly but instead it took 11 turns! Talk about a slug fest.

This was a great intro game for v3. There were a bunch of changes that were highlighted for me while still not having to stop all the time to check rules. I'm really starting to see how important selection and deployment is for scenarios where you only get part of your force to start with. I also really liked the change in reserve rolls that allow you to play with more of your force early instead of waiting and not rolling a 5+.
