Skirmish FoW Round 1 - Maori Rifles vs German Pioneers in Encounter

Maori's wrestle an objective away from the Germans, but is it too late....

Round 1 (Encounter) I was matched against Bob McBride who has playing a lean German Pioneer force.  Which consisted of:

HQ
2 x Pioneer Platoons (5 x Stands in each)
3 x PaK 38s
4 x Marder I's
3 x Panzer III M's
3 x Anti-aircraft guns
4 x 10.5cm Arty

Kiwi Maori Rifles
HQ
2 x Platoons with Piat (3 sections)
1 x Platoon with Piat (2 sections)
1 x UC Platoon (3 carriers)
3 x Shermans
8 x 25 pdrs

We were playing encounter with the objectives just on the other side of the town and the opposite side of the far side of the table and in the for ground they are beside the Kiwi Arty and near the stream and the edge of the table.

SET UP
The lines for the battle are drawn.

Marders deploy to protect the 10.5cm's and an objective.

Pioneers and PaK 38s deploy to cover the other objective.

Kiwi Arty park itself on one objective.

A Kiwi Platoon prepares to move into the village.

Kiwi Recce are ready to sneak and peak!

TURN 1
The UCs get to close to the Marders and pay the price, first blood to the Germans!

Going 2nd works to the Kiwi's advantage allowing for the 25 pdrs to knock out 2 guns with a Stonk!

The UCs disengage while the Marders spread out to avoid Arty.

Casualties
German
2 x 10.5cm guns

Kiwi
2 x UCs

TURN 2
Without a target the guns dig in.

The Marders continue to avoid the Arty.

The 10.5cm guns lose another stand and then fail their motivation check leaving the battlefield.

Casualties
German
10.5cm gun platoon

Kiwi
2 x UCs

TURN 3

Shermans arrive and one gets bailed going over the hedge, meanwhile an observer moves to try and corner the Marders.

The lone UC moves back into the wheat field

Ze Germans dig in on the objective.

Casualties
German
10.5cm gun platoon

Kiwi
2 x UCs

TURN 4

Panzers arrive to support the Marders and the OC.

While Kiwi infantry arrive to support the Shermans.

The UC bogs trying to cross the wood line.

Casualties
German
10.5cm gun platoon

Kiwi
2 x UCs

TURN 5

The Shermans prove to be too tempting a target and the Panzers expose themselves, only to be hit by steel rain!

The Anti-tank firepower massed against the Shermans, knocking out 2 and causing the platoon to flee!

Another Pioneer platoon arrives from reserve and prepares to dig in on the objective.

Casualties
German
10.5cm gun platoon

Kiwi
2 x UCs
Sherman Platoon

TURN 6

All guns repeat killing 2 Anti-aircraft guns.

Meanwhile the Kiwi's have infiltrated 2 platoons and the OC through the town and are staged to launch an assault on the Germans

Casualties
German
10.5cm gun platoon

Kiwi
UC Platoon
Sherman Platoon

TURN 7

The Marders realize the threat to the other objective and move to counter, but will it be to late?

With the Infantry dug in the Panzers must remain to ensure the objective doesn't fall to them.

The Kiwi left flank.

The Marders have the same luck as the UC crossing the wood line.

The Kiwi guns fire softening up the Germans before the assault.

The Germans are able to pin one platoon but the other sweeps in and starts killing Jerrys!

The Kiwi Infantry force the Germans off the objective but alas the game ends before I can start a turn with it in my control!

This was a great game and it went back and forth for may turns.  On the day we said that Bob won 4-3 but a couple days ago when talking with some other people about this, it was Bob's objective that I was taking, he doesn't get any points for stopping me so really we both lost and it should have been a 2-1 for points.  Oh well next time we will make sure that we have it sorted out.  Stay tuned for the other 2 AARs from Skirmish 2011!
